Ruffles have been around for a long time, from adorning dresses on the Shakespearean stage, where people said crazy things like “Blow, blow, thou winter wind! Thou art not so unkind” to Charlie Thereon sporting them recently on the Red Carpet. And it is probably safe to say that they will be around even after hell freezes over.

The only difference between Victorian and today’s Ruffles, is that it is so very easy to make them today by using the Ruffler attachment with your Usha Janome Sewing Machine. Do not get intimidated by its look, in fact its innovative design actually helps you to use the ruffle more easily. You can use this attachment to ruffle fabrics or pleat it to a desired fullness quickly and easily. Besides it also allows you to vary the size of the ruffles.

RufflerEven if you have never seen a Ruffler Foot before, follow these simple steps and you will soon be making be making ruffles fit to adorn Queen Victoria’s neck! Let’s begin by understanding the parts that make up this magical device that conjure up such imaginings.

Your Sewing Machine & the Ruffler

Now that you have a vague idea about its part, let’s attach it to your Usha Janome Sewing Machine. (Never mind if you cannot remember the name of all the parts, even we don’t!)

Attaching Ruffler to the Machine

  1. Thread the machine with polyester thread in needle and bobbin. Cotton thread has a tendency to break easily.
  2. Remove the current pressure foot by pressing the Foot Holder/Release Button.
  3. Raise the Needle Bar to the highest position.
  4. Position the Fork Arm (black curved piece) over the Needle Clamp Screw. Lower the Presser Foot bar and snap in place.

Needle Placement

  1. Lower the needle slowly to make sure that the needle clears the Needle Hole.
  2. If the needle does not clear the Needle Hole, loosen the Needle Hole Position screw to adjust the needle hole position. There are two Needle Hole Positioning screws. Refer to the diagram to move the position hole to the correct location.
  3. The Ruffler is now adapted to your sewing machine. This process only needs to be done onceruffler_2

If you are getting impatient to use your new Ruffler (who wouldn’t), you can jump to the Ruffling Technique section down below. However, we insist you go through the ‘Know Your Ruffler’ section right below, to have a better experience.

Know Your Ruffler

Ratchet Gear Feed Plate or Stitch Control

This is the part of the Ruffler with the numbers 1, 6 and 12. These settings will determine how often the Ruffling Blade (saw tooth edge) will gather or tuck. When set at 1, with eruffler_3ach needle penetration the Ruffling Blade will move creating a tiny gather. When set at 6, the Ruffling Blade will move and create a tuck every 6 stitches. When set at 12, the Ruffling Blade will move and create a tuck every 12 stitches. When set at the Star, no tucks will be sewn but a straight stitch is obtained

Ruffling Depth Adjust Screw

The Ratchet Gear Feed Plate and Ruffler Depth Adjust Screw work hand-in-hand to create exactly the type of gathers or tucks desired. The Ruffler Depth Adjust Screw determines the depth of the tuck. When the screw is set at 1 the Ratchet Gear will take a tiny bite of the fabric. The higher the number the larger the bite. If tiny gathers are desired, set the Ratchet Gear at 1 and the Depth Adjust screw between 1 and 4.

Stitch Length

Another important element to achieving beautiful ruffles is how long the stitch length is set on the sewing machine. The shorter the stitch length the tighter the ruffles. A stitch length of 5.0 is suggested when the Ratchet Gear Feed Plate is set at 1 and the Ruffling Depth Adjust Screw is at a higher number.

Place the fabric underneath the Ruffling Blade and above the Cloth Guide Plate. As you sew, the Ruffling Blade will move, creating a tuck, according to the adjustments made to the Gear Plate and Ruffling Depth. For best result, sew slowly

Cloth Guides

There are two diffruffler_6erent Cloth Guides on the Ruffler. One located in the front of the Ruffler and the second located on the right side. When the fabric is place in the Cloth Guide in the front a 1/4″ seam allowance is sewn. When placed in the Cloth Guide on the right, a 1″ seam allowance is sewn.

Ribbon Slot

The Ribbon Slot is located directly in front of the Needle Hole. This slot can be used to guide the ribbon or piping which can be sewn on while making a ruffle. The ribbon will not gather but the fabric it is sewn to will gather.

Ruffling Techniques

The length of fabric needed to be cut would be determined by the amount of ruffling desired. It is best to always sew a test strip to determine length of fabric required. 1. Cut a strip of cotton fabric at least 18″. For a test strip cut the width at least 2″.

  1. For a gathered effect set the Ratchet Gear Plate on 1. Set the Ruffling Depth Screw to 1 or less.
  2. Set the stitch length on 2 – 2.5. Place the fabric under the Ruffling Blade and sew. 18″ of fabric should gather down to approximately 9″.
  3. Cut another strip of cotton fabric at least 18″ x 2″. Set the Ratchet Gear Plate on 6 and the Ruffling Depth Screw on 4. Stitch length 2.2. Place the fabric under the Ruffling Blade and sew. The fabric strip gathered down to approximately 12″.
  4. Test sew several lengths of fabric to see exactly what happened each time the Ratchet Gear Plate, Ruffling Depth Screw and stitch length settings are changed.
  5. Make a notebook, writing down the setting used for your samples for future reference.
  6. Once the ruffle is made, attach to the project with a straight stitch, right sides together.

And now you are ready to go. Next time we will teach you how to Ruffle around a Corner for a Pillow. Watch this Space.

Timeless Beauty meets Timeless Classics

Having long crossed her silver, golden and diamond Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in British history on 9 September 2015. Completing 60 years in 2012, the Queen during her Diamond Jubilee celebration stated “In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighbourliness “

Friendships, and social causes meant a lot to the Queen, who served as a driver and a mechanic with the Women’s Auxiliary Service during the Second World War. It is in this same spirit that the queen continues to visit various parts of the world. During one such tour, the Queen found herself at the Usha Sewing Machine factory in Sri Lanka. A moment of pride at Usha where we continue to take inspiration from the encouraging words shared by her. Our paths have often merged in the past and will continue to merge in the future. Standing at the crossroads of history, we take a nostalgic look back between the folds of time.

Buying Guide to Ceiling Fans

With India being a tropical country, fans are a must have for every home. Fans make you feel comfortable in a room by circulating air. There are a wide variety of fans to choose from, from simple finishes to decorative, four blades to three blades, high air delivery to low noise. Such multiple choices make it difficult to choose the right fan, so let’s makes your choices simpler: Here are a few quick facts that will help you to choose the right fan.

Why ceiling fans are required?

The primary purpose of a ceiling fan is to provide ventilation and improved air circulation to make you feel cooler by virtue of the velocity of air. It is like the comfort of a breeze in an otherwise warm day.

Being a key part of the room decor, ceiling fans can provide a room not only with a comfortable environment but also with appropriate lighting, a decorative touch and enhanced aesthetics appeal.

How fan makes you feel cool?

A ceiling fan cools a room by creating a “wind chill effect”; and not by lowering the room temperature. “Wind chill effect” makes you feel cooler by accelerating the evaporation of perspiration on your skin. It is the feeling you get when you open the window in a moving car.  An air skin velocity of ~1.5 m/sec makes one feel cooler by over 5 0 C.

If you run a ceiling fan in a room whose temperature is 27 degrees, it will create a “wind chill effect” making you feel as if the temperature is 22 degrees. When used in conjunction with an air conditioner, a ceiling fan can lower energy costs, because you can set the thermostat of your air conditioner at a higher temperature.Fans1

How to determine Ceiling Fan Sweep Size?

You should select a fan based on size of the room. Fan sweep size is measured by taking the width straight across from one blade tip to the other blade tip. A fan larger than necessary is fine as long it has space to rotate properly. A fan smaller than needed does not effectively circulate air.

Room Size Fan Sweep
4m* 5m to 4.5m *4.5 m 1400 mm
3.3m*4m to 3.7m *3.7m 1200 mm
2.7m*3.3m to 3m*3m 1050 mm
2.4m *2.7m to 2.4m *2.4 m 900 mm

Important:-To optimize air delivery, your fan should be approximately 3 meters from the ground and 0.3 meters from the roof.

Calculating distance between two fans.

For Larger rooms with more than one fan, the shaft distance between each fan will depend on the sweep of fan.

Sweep of Fan 36″ 42″ 48″ 56″
Centre of difference 1.8 m  2 m 2.5 m 3 m

What is a blade pitch in ceiling fan and why is it important?

Blade pitch is the angle, measured in degrees, between a 180 degree horizontal plane and a ceiling fan’s blade tilt.

Why is it important?

The angle of the blade makes a difference in how much air a fan is able to circulate throughout a room.

This degree of blade pitch will allow your ceiling fan to move the “just right” amount of air – not too much (you don’t need a wind tunnel in your room), nor too little (you do need to feel a nice breeze).

A good way to understand how blade pitch effects air movement is to equate the blades of the fan to the oars of a rowboat. If you have ever tried to row a boat, you know that if you put the oars in the water virtually flat, it takes very little effort to row; but even if you row very fast, the boat moves very slowly. If, on the other hand, you tilt the oars at a steep angle in the water, it becomes very difficult to row the boat, but each stroke makes substantial progress. You will need to be much stronger and in better shape to sustain a higher rate of speed for any period of time in case of the latter.

This principle applies to airflow of ceiling fans as well. Air delivery of a ceiling fan is the result of the aerodynamics of the fan. Its aerodynamic is governed by blade pitch, blade length, and motor characteristics. Hence higher speed /RPM doesn’t necessarily mean higher air delivery. This is a common mistake one does in fan selection by making decisions based on a single parameter like RPM.

That is why leading manufacturer of fans always go through various designing and testing procedure to ensure that blade characteristics and the motor power complement each another.

How important is motor in a ceiling fan?

The motor is the most important component of a ceiling fan. For example, motors with higher power capability can be matched with high pitch aerodynamic blades to deliver high air at lower speed/RPM and hence lower noise. Thus, for a fan to operate efficiently and effectively, the motor’s characteristics must be engineered to match the blades.

Standard ceiling fans have single phase electric motors. These motors are typically of lower efficiency.  With the need to save energy alternate motor technologies are being explored.  The Brushless DC motor is one such technology which is more than twice as efficient.  There are ongoing active developments to make BLDC more cost effective to accelerate its deployment.

Can ceiling fans be used in winter?

It may seem a bit odd to use ceiling fans in winter, but modern age fans are built for year-round use, saving your money on both heating and cooling costs. This can be achieved by changing the direction of the ceiling fan’s rotation (clockwise or anti-clockwise). Depending on the model, the ceiling fan’s direction can be changed through the reverse switch on the fan’s motor or via a remote control.

Ceiling Fan Direction in Summer: Anti-Clockwise

During summers, run your fan’s blades anti-clockwise to blow air downward and create a cooling breeze so you can set your thermostat at a higher setting and still feel cool while saving money on air conditioning costs.

Ceiling Fan Direction in Winter: Clockwise

During winters, ceiling fans can help heating systems to operate more efficiently. Reverse the direction of the blades and set the fan at a low speed. The fan’s gentle upward draft will force any warm air concentrated near the ceiling to circulate down and around the living space.

The modern age fans are manufactured based on lifestyle needs where in a ceiling fan not only acts as device to make you feel cooler but also adds aesthetic appeal to your room.
